Backgrounder:
On February 7, 1969, a healthy baby girl was born in the City of Iloilo, Philippines to a successful Sportsman-Businessman Prisco “Taba” Perez and his wife Imelda Quevenco Bolinas of Alta Tierra Village in Jaro. She was named Sheila, and her family and close relations fondly called her “Bing”.
The “Unica Hija” who have two brothers, Biboy and Boots, attended schooling from kindergarten to secondary grades at the St. Joseph School; the Angelicum School; Assumption-Iloilo; University of San Agustin and at the Colegio de San Jose in Jaro, Iloilo City where she graduated from High School.
Likewise, Sheila took dancing lessons at the once-upon-a- time famous Dureza Dancing School in Iloilo City where she learned to perform the “Ballet” gracefully.
During her 18th birthday an “en Grande” celebration was held to honor the Debutante and introduced her to Iloilo’s society, complete with all the glamour and grandeur that included the traditional dance of “Cotillon de Honor.”
She went to St. Paul’s College of Iloilo but later transferred to the Iloilo Doctor’s College (IDC) where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree. After passing the required government licensure examination, she worked in Manila as RN-ICU at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center. Much later, she decided to pursue the exercise of her noble profession in the U.S.A. and settled in Chicago, Illinois.
Meanwhile, in faraway Michigan, a handsome young former Seminarian, an alumnus of the St. Clement’s College in Iloilo City and a free-lance Photo Journalist who also covered the 1986 EDSA-I People’s Power Revolution in Metro Manila named Edwin “Nonong” Roxas learned of Sheila’s presence in the land of Uncle Sam. Thereafter, he took immediate action --yes, aksyon dayon! Nonong was a close friend and acquaintance of the Perez household being their former good neighbor at the Alta Tierra Village in Jaro, while some others suspected him as the “teenage crush” of the only daughter of the Perez-Bolinas family of Iloilo City.
After frequent long distance call and weekend travel back and forth on the Michigan-Chicago route; finally, Cupid played a role and hit the target, Bull”s eye!.. And the rest, sabi dah! is history.
Presently, the happy Roxas-Perez family live in San Diego, Ca. together with their first child or the “Miracle of Love” named Ethan, the teenage “mucho-macho” ladies man. And their second child or achievement, their pretty and talented daughter Pia, Princess of Galahad Street.
Sheila P. Roxas, BSN-RN now works at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. While Nonong is the registered owner of Best One Stop Travel & Cargo, a duly licensed cargo forwarder, and a domestic and international Travel Agency with offices at 550 E 8th Street, Suite 6 National City, San Diego, CA. 91950
